Canine Enrichment: Why Sniffing Beats Speed
Ten minutes of proper sniffing can tire a dog more than a long march. Here's why enrichment matters more than mileage.
Enrichment simply means giving a dog chances to do the things dogs are built to do: sniff, forage, chew, shred, problem solve and choose. It is not an extra on top of a walk, for most dogs it is the part of the day that actually tires them out.
A twenty minute sniffy amble where your dog sets the pace will usually leave them more settled than an hour of fast lead walking. Scent work is mentally demanding, and dogs come home satisfied rather than wired.
Easy things to try at home: scatter part of their dinner in the garden, stuff a hollow toy and freeze it, put cardboard boxes and old towels out for shredding, or leave a new-but-safe object in the room and let them investigate it in their own time.
